Helena Mae Gommel, 94, of Franklin, died Wednesday, September 16, 2020.
Funeral services were Wednesday, September 23, 2020, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home in Columbus.
Mrs. Gommel received her early education from Scipio, Jackson, and Hope, and graduated from Flat Rock High School in 1946. She had been pianist for churches in Hartsville, Hope, and Elizabethtown, the gospel group, The Hallelujah Belles, as well as the Columbus Senior Center group for over 15 years. She also enjoyed playing the xylophone and the accordion. Mrs. Gommel enjoyed making with her hands, especially for church members and veterans. She always entered a pie in the county fair's pie baking contest and had won a grand champion award for her creamy peach pie. Mrs. Gommel enjoyed any kind of needlework, crocheting, embroidering, and making quilts for many of her family members and had been a seamstress for J.C. Penny Co. She was a member of the Womens'Äô Christian Temperance Union throughout the organization's existence. She had also worked for Bartholomew County Hospital and Larry Nunn's Accounting Services.
Born May 8, 1926 in Decatur County, Mrs. Gommel was the daughter of Samuel and Dannie Johnson Riddle. On June 30, 1946, she married Earl Gommel at the Hartsville Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son Daniel (Marjorie) Gommel of Orlando, Florida; five grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and great-great grandchildren.
Mrs. Gommel was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a son, Olin.
