Gayle Thornton Kring was a U.S. Navy vet
Gayle Thornton Kring, 97, of Madison died Wednesday, July 8, 2020, at 5:30 a.m. at. His home in Madison.
Funeral services were Sunday, July 12, 2020, at North Madison Baptist Church in Madison. A final salute was conducted by major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 of the American Legion and the U.S. Naval Ceremonial Unit. Pastor Frank McGee officiated. Interment followed at Ghent Masonic Cemetery in Ghent, Kentucky. Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison was entrusted with arrangements.
Mr. Kring graduated in 1941 from Carrollton High School in Carrollton, Kentucky and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He attended Bryant & Stratton Business College n Louisville, Kentucky, and had worked with Dunn and Bradstreet in the accounting and budget department. Mr. Kring then worked at Jefferson Proving Ground, retiring in 1977, as chief financial controller. He was a member of North Madison Baptist Church, past president of Jefferson County United Way, and the Madison Consolidated School Board. He was also a life member of Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 of the American Legion and had served twice as master of the Ghent Masonic Lodge. Mr. Kring was a founding member of Sunrise Golf Course in Madison and was a Kentucky Colonel. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, mowing grass, singing in the church choir, and being with family.
Born June 18, 1923 in Bethlehem, Kentucky, Mr. Kring was the son of Charles Mason and Mary Baker Kring. He married Mary Carolyn Riley at Duncan Memorial Chapel in Crestwood, Kentucky, and she preceded him in death.
Survivors include sons, Wesley (Sonja) Kring of Madison and Judson (Christen) Kring of Indianapolis; daughters, Gayla (Dave) Cheatham of North Vernon and Mary Beth Shaw of Columbus; grandchildren, Amy, Jason, Katavah, Kahanna, Mikiah, Haniah, Thomas, Veronica, Seth, and Jaclyn; seven great-grandchildren; and brother, Raymond Kring of Frankfort, Kentucky.
Mr. Kring was preceded in death by his parents; wife; grandchildren, David and Julianne Kring; brothers, Austin, mason, Rollyn, Robert, and Logan Kring; and sisters, Mary Evelyn Kring, Elizabeth O'Neal, and Ruth Wohl.
Memorial contributions may be made to the North Madison Baptist Church through the funeral home.
