Samuel B. Hicks, 81, Simplicity Funeral Home

Samuel B. Hicks, 81, of Whiteland, died Saturday, April 6, 2019 at University Heights in Greenwood.

Memorial services celebrating Mr. Hicks' life will be held Saturday, April 27, 2019, at 11 a.m. with visitation beginning at 10 a.m., at Old Union United Church of Christ, 12703 N 50 W. Edinburgh, IN 46124. Lunch will be served afterwards. Arrangements were entrusted to Simplicity Funeral and Cremation Care, Indianapolis.

Mr. Hicks graduated from North Vernon High School and earned both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music from Indiana University. He served as Professor of Music at Franklin College from 1966 until his retirement in 2003. While there, he directed several choral ensembles, including FC Singers, the Keys, the Kites, the Gathering, and the Madrigal Singers, who presented an annual Madrigal Dinner for 25 years. Mr. Hicks also gave voice lessons to students and residents of surrounding communities. He was the former choral director at University Heights Methodist Church and Center United Methodist church in Indianapolis, at First Presbyterian Church in Franklin and at Old Union United Church of Christ in Edinburgh, where he served until his death.

Mr. Hicks was a charter member and past director of the Voices of Franklin, the Johnson County Oratorio Society, and a patron member of Matinee Musicale. He was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed fishing.

Born November 14, 1937, in North Vernon, Mr. Hicks was the son of Charles A. and Frances Brooks Hicks.

Survivors include his wife, Patti Campbell; brothers: Paul (Darlene) Hicks of North Vernon, Charles (Beth Morris) Hicks of Bossier City, Louisiana, and Harry Hicks of Staten Island, New York; stepdaughter, Lorrain Sargent Huhta of Hornbrook, California.

Memorial contributions may be made to Old Union Church.
