Betty Sue Matthews, 81, of Sellersburg died Thursday, November 1, 2018, at Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville.
Funeral services were Sunday, November 4, 2018, at Collins Funeral Home in Scottsburg with Mayor William Graham officiating. Interment was at Scottsburg Cemetery.
Mrs. Matthews was a former owner and operator of the old Northside Grocery and owned and operated several other businesses in the community. She was a former member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary Post #1693 in Scottsburg and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Born October 27, 1937, in Hazard, Kentucky, Mrs. Matthews was the daughter of William Couch and Cynthia Combs Couch. She married Wayne B. Matthews, Sr., who preceded her in death Sept. 10, 1993.
Survivors include her companion, Melvin Thomas of Sellersburg; daughter, Debbie (Virgil) Rasche of Oakland City; son, David (Gayle) Matthews of Crothersville; sisters, Vivian (Danny) Baker of Scottsburg and Carol (Charles) Scifres of Tampa, Florida; grandchildren, Noah (Melanie) and Josh (Tina Chen) Rasche, Brooke (Aron) Newberry, Stephanie (Dillon Hopper) Matthews, and Ethan, Susanna, David, and Katie Matthews; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by a son, Wayne B. Matthews, Jr.; brother, Billy Couch; and sisters, Joan DeHart, Brenda Ramsey, and Deanna Cole.
