Samuel Oliver Bennett moved to W'port in 2016

Samuel Oliver Bennett, 91, of Westport died at 1:05 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at Decatur County Memorial Hospital in Greensburg.

Funeral services were Saturday, April 14, 2018, at Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport with Rev. Malvin McCullough, Rev. Tom Mattingly, and Rev. Steve Malone officiating. Burial followed at Union Flat Rock Cemetery with military graveside rites.

Mr. Bennett was raised in Russell Springs, Kentucky, moved to Millhousen area in 1958, and had lived in Westport the past two years. He retired from Reliance Electric in 1988 and was also a farmer and enjoyed raising cattle. Mr. Bennett served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Union Flat Rock Baptist Church and the American Legion Post #129.

Born October 24, 1926 in Columbia, Kentucky, Mr. Bennett was the son of Oliver and Nora Smith Bennett. He married Thelma Mae Crosby September 13, 1947, in Franklin and she preceded him in death April 8, 2003. He married Mary Koger Helms October 16, 2005, in Westport and she survives.

Other survivors include daughters, Donna Ison of Columbus and Terri (Jeff) Prewitt of Seymour; sons, David Bennett of Westport and Randy (Paula) Bennett of North Vernon; his stepdaughters, Jami Lea Helms and Jennifer Voris, both of Westport; stepsons, David (Sharon), Dale (Sherri), Jace (Carol) and Daniel (Marilyn) Helms, all of Westport, and Dennis Helms of Beech Grove; sister, Rachel Irvin of Cincinnati, Ohio; brothers, Herbert Bennett of Edinburgh and Ernest Bennett of Russel Springs, Kentucky; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; son, Jeffrey Bennett; brother, Albert Bennett; and sister, Mildred Stapp.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana or Union Flat Rock Church.
