Robert L. Childs, 69 engineered 'big rigs'
Robert Lincoln "Bob" Childs, 69, of Madison died Friday, Dec. 1, 2017, at Norton Audubon Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.
Memorial services will be at 6 p.m. Friday, December 8, 2017, at Lytle Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Vail Chapel in Madison. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday, December 8, 2017, from 4 p.m. until the service.
Mr. Childs was a graduate of Southwestern High School and was inducted into the school's Sports Hall of Fame for achievements in cross country. He attended Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for four years and drove and engineered "big rigs," traveling the country and working many years in California and Arkansas. Mr. Childs retired from Toyota in Columbus. He also lived in North Vernon and Whiteland, and in Florida after college. Mr. Childs enjoyed environmental civil engineering, astronomy, bike-riding, music, and college basketball, especially the University of Kentucky. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, and gatherings with family and friends.
Born near Kent in Jefferson County, Mr. Childs was the son of William Selbert and Elsie McCartney Childs.
Survivors include his wife, Gwen Gosman Childs; daughter, Tirzah Childs-Biddinger of North Vernon; stepson, Gabriel Graham of Madison; sister, Patricia Berard of Whiteland; brother, William Childs of Greenwood; and three grandchildren.
Mr. Childs was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sally Willow Childs; and a son, Adam Josiah Childs.
Expressions of sympathy through the funeral home may take the form of donations to the American Kidney Fund.
