WW II vet Norris Wayne Howard interred at Vevay
Norris Wayne Howard, 93, of Madison died Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at 1:50 p.m. at the home of his daughter in North Vernon.
Funeral services were Monday at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison with Rev. Donald F. Locke officiating. A final salute by Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion, was Monday after the services at the funeral home. Burial, with military honors, was at Vevay Cemetery in Vevay.
Mr. Howard, a 1940 graduate of Vevay High School, was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Navy. He attended Indiana Business College. He had been employed with General Motors in their Allison Plant in Indianapolis as a materials scheduler. Mr. Howard then worked for ITT Thompson's Industrial in North Vernon as the personnel and safety director for over 20 years and then worked for Cummins Engine Company as a machine operator. He retired from David R. Webb Veneers in Edinburgh as the safety director. Mr. Howard was a member of the North Madison Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening, being outdoors, spending time with his family, and watching Cincinnati Reds baseball and I.U. basketball.
Born February 27, 1921, in Vevay, Mr. Howard was the son of Joshua Howard and Cullie Locke Howard Cancilla. He married Mary Alice Furnish on October 22, 1958, at the Switzerland Baptist Church in Vevay.
Survivors include two daughters, Susan Howard Schafer of North Vernon and Jane (Robert) Wakeland of Greenfield; son, John N. (Dr. Fred McCall) Howard of San Francisco, California; grandchildren, Jessica E. and Rebecca J. Schafer, Rachel M. (SrA Mark) Montgomery, Andrea L. Ticknor, Lydia E. (Sgt. Kenneth) Stepp, Jera Lee Cronin, Angie Lee, and Shawn and Steve Shepherd; two great-grandchildren; step-grandchildren, Brent (Jenny) Wakeland and Laura (Ronnie) Moore; and four step-great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Howard was preceded in death by a daughter, Ann Shepherd.
