Clara Mae Hoffmann Sommer, 88, of Madison died Sunday, July 20, 2014, at 6 p.m. at her home.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Chapel in Madison with Father Christopher A. Craig officiating. Calling will be Friday 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until time of the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at St. Patrick Cemetery in Madison.
Mrs. Sommer resided all her life in Madison and was a 1943 graduate of North Madison High School. She was a graduate of St. Mary Business School with a degree in bookkeeping and worked at Sommer Masonry as a bookkeeper. She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, socializing with friends and family, IU basketball, working on her computer, reading, and working crossword puzzles. She was a charter member of the Phi Beta Psi Sorority.
Born September 21, 1925, in Madison, Mrs. Sommer was the daughter of Edward C. and Ethel Alexander Hoffmann. She married Bernard Fred Sommer on April 12, 1947, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Madison. He died November 25, 2013.
Survivors include daughters, Judy (Chris Land) Sommer of Louisville, Kent., Connie (Bob) Wolf of Madison, and Cindy (Eston) Long of Hanover; son, Mike (Peggy) Sommer of Madi-son; grandchildren, Kelly Hill, Brad Wolf, and Katie and Joe Sommer; three great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and brother, Phil Hoffmann of Palmetto, Florida.
In addition to parents and husband, Mrs. Sommer was preceded in death by a son, Bernard Joseph Sommer; and sisters, Bettie Jenkins, Anna Thevenow, Mary Kathryn Craig, and Rosemary Geyman.
