Rex H. Banister, 82 had sister here in city
Rex H. Banister, 82, of Shelbyville died Friday, June 20, 2014, at his home.
A celebration of life was held Wednesday at the Fellowship Hall at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Shelbyville. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville, with Rev. Bruce Banister officiating. Rites will be conducted by a local veteran organization. Murphy-Parks Funeral Home of Shelbyville was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Banister, a U.S. Navy veteran, was a farmer and retired from Amtrak in 1992 after 17 years of service. He was a member of Fairland Baptist Church and American Legion Post 70. While in the U.S. Navy, Mr. Banister was also a boxer. He enjoyed all sporting events, especially horse racing and fishing, and reading the Bible.
Born August 17, 1931, in Shelbyville, Mr. Banister was the son of Ivan and Ruby Taylor Banister. He married Helen Kay Paulus on July 22, 1967, and she survives.
Other survivors include children, Lori Amos and Lisa and Mark Banister, all of Shelbyville, Jackie (Rick) Colee of St. Paul, and Bruce (Joyce) Banister of Fairland; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sisters, Eva Ferguson of North Vernon and Edna Davidson of Seymour.
Mr. Banister was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and three sisters.
Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the American Lung Association.
