William G. Smock, 86, of Vernon died at 9:25 a.m. Saturday, January 25, 2014 at Jennings Health Care Center.
A memorial service will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at the Vernon Baptist Church with Rev. Don Morris officiating. Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services were entrusted with the arrangements.
Mr. Smock graduated from Manuel High School in Indianapolis and served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman from 1946 to 1948. He was well-known in the area as a ceramic tile contractor until his retirement after 50 plus years. Mr. Smock was a member of Vernon Baptist Church. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, camping, traveling and woodworking and had also taught swimming for many years.
Born October 22, 1927 in Indianapolis, Mr. Smock was the son of Verne and Bertha Jane Smith Smock. He married Wanda L. Dowell on October 25, 1952 in North Vernon. She survives.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Smock is survived by three daughters, Teri (Steve) Sorenson of Vernon, Lisa (Danny) Barton of North Vernon and Beth Smock of Houghton, Michigan; four grandchildren, Isaac (Elisa) Fry and Shasta (Matt) Woodard both of North Vernon, Travis (Megan) Sorenson of Vernon and Trent (Kacee) Sorenson of Paris Crossing; and ten great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert K. Smock.
The family has requested donations be made to Vernon Baptist Church or Our Hospice of Jennings County through the funeral home.
