Ruth L. Summers, 89 worked in the school system for 23 years
Ruth L. Summers, 89, of North Vernon died at 11 p.m. Monday, December 9, 2013 at her residence.
Funeral services for Mrs. Summers will be 11 a.m. Friday at the First Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. David Roscoe and Dr. Randy James officiating.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to the funeral on Friday at the church. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery. Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services were entrusted with handling the arrangements.
Mrs. Summers, a 1942 graduate of Daviess County High School in Washington, worked in the Jennings County School Systems for 23 years, where she was a secretary at Hayden School and a Foster Grandparent for three years. She also worked in the Veterans Administration in Indianapolis for 11 years. Mrs. Summers was member of the 1st Church of the Nazarene where she was a former VBS Director, Sunday school teacher, and Sunday school Department Supervisor. Her hobbies included sewing, crossword puzzles, reading, and collecting Precious Moment's figurines.
Born April 20, 1924, Mrs. Summers was the daughter of Frank and Emma Sanders Steen. She married Robert Summers on June 29, 1947 in Washington and he preceded her in death on April 6, 1995.
Survivors include two sons, Tim (Jewel) Summers of Indianapolis and Randell (Brenda) Summers of North Vernon; one daughter, Kristie (Tom) Wiley of Elizabethtown; one sister, Norma Cook of Cincinnati, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Edith (Derek) Hounshel of North Carolina, Ann Conaway of Colorado, Amy Summers of Texas, Misty Summers of North Vernon, John Summers of Brownstown, Kenneth Summers of Columbus, and Andrew and Rebekah Wiley, both of Elizabethtown; and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Summers was preceded in death by one brother, James Steen; three sisters, Catherine Hill, Ruby Bolding, and Dana Parr; and two grandchildren, John Oren Wiley and Roberta Brooke Wiley.
