Robert Abner Welch, 92 will be interred in Virginia
Robert Abner Welch, 92, of North Vernon died at 3:20 p.m. Friday, November 15, 2013 at St. Vincent Jennings Hospital.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services with the Rev. Dale Boyd officiating. Calling is at the funeral home Monday from 5 until 7 p.m. and one hour prior to the service Tuesday. Burial will be in the Powell Valley Cemetery in Dryden, Virginia.
Mr. Welch was a World War II Army veteran. He worked for 16 years for Swifty Oil Company in Columbus and North Vernon. He also farmed and owned and operated Welch's Service and Towing for 50 years. Mr. Welch enjoyed NASCAR and football and was an avid Indianapolis Colts fan. He also loved animals, especially dogs.
Born July 25, 1921, in Rock Falls, Illinois, Mr. Welch was the son of Abner Cecil and Beulah Christianson Welch.
Survivors include his son, John (Lois) Welch of Clinton, Iowa; daughter, Mary (Gary) Gardner of Mesa, Arizona; stepchildren, J.R. (Lillian) Combs of Duffield, Virginia, Archie (Johnnie) Combs of Rose Hull, Virginia, Russell (Teresa) Ellis of North Vernon, Glenda (Ken) Hedges of Aguanga, California, Pamela Ellis of Indianapolis, and Stephanie (Glenn) Wheeler of Knoxville, Tennessee; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; and step-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Welch was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Pearl Brock Welch and Diana Blackford Welch; daughter, Susan Jane Welch; brother, Homer Welch; and sister, Alice Stafford.
