Alex Omer McClain, 78, the father of 11 children
Alex Omer McClain, 78, of Versailles died Thursday, October 3, 2013 at 3:32 a.m.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Grandview Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel near Madison with calling being from 1 p.m. until time of the service at the chapel. Bro. Dale Day will officiate. Military honors with the Versailles American Legion Post 173 will be held at the graveside. Interment will be in Shelby Cemetery near Versailles. Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. McClain, a U.S. Army veteran, had worked for many years with Cummins Engine Company in Columbus. He was a member of the Church of God in Lamonte, California and American Legion Post 173 in Versailles. He enjoyed traveling.
Born March 5, 1935 in Versailles, Mr. McClain was the son of Jesse V. and Goldie McClain. He married Ramona A. Gelvin and she survives.
Other survivors include three sons, Kenneth McClain of Butlerville, Charles W. (Diana) Smith of Illinois and William Smith of California; eight daughters, Mary Ann (David) Borders of Rexville, Helen (David) Ferrell of Cross Plains, Karen McClain of Jefferson, Texas, Connie McClain of Madison, Ruth, Connie, Edith and Ruth Ellen Smith, all of California; 29 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Mr. McClain was preceded in death by a grandson, Justin Clayton; brothers, Ivan, Alva and Gordon McClain and sisters, Geneva Bales, Emma Negangard, Imogene Perkins and Leah Illg.
