James Earl Layton, 75, in W'port most of life
James Earl Layton, 75, of Westport died at 7:20 p.m. Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana inpatient facility.
The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport with Rev. Steve Malone officiating. Burial will be at the Westport Cemetery with military graveside rites. A time of visitation will be held Wednesday from 4 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Layton, a U.S. Army veteran, had been a Decatur County resident most of his life, graduating from Sandcreek High School in 1955. He retired in 2003 from Interstate Brands after 23 years of service where he worked as a truck driver. Mr. Layton was a member of the IOOF Lodge #189 and American Legion Post #339 at Westport. He was an avid reader and enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and taking cruises.
Born March 3, 1938 in Ocala, Florida, Mr. Layton was the son of Earl and Maretta Hessler Layton. He married Edna Caffee in Austin, Tennessee on April 23, 1966.
Survivors include his wife Edna Layton of Westport; sons, James A. (Wendy) Layton, Michael Grissom, Chris Grissom and Jay (Cecelia) Grissom, all of Westport; daughter, Charlene (Keith) Cooley of Westport; sisters, Betty (Gayle) Gatewood of Westport and Helen (Ron) Graue of Greensburg; brother, Norman (Betty) Layton of Westport; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
