William E. Dowden, 86, was a World War II vet
William E. Dowden, 86, of Columbus died at 9:07 p.m. Sunday, September 22, 2013, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home in Columbus with the Rev. Marc Vance officiating. Family and friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 1 p.m. until service time Thursday. Burial will be at Flat Rock Baptist Cemetery. Full military honors will be presented by Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.
Mr. Dowden was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He retired from Cosco Inc. in 1988 after 35 years of service. An outdoorsman, Mr. Dowden enjoyed gardening, fishing, traveling and spending time with his family. He also followed horse racing, the Indianapolis Colts, Cincinnati Reds, IU basketball and NASCAR.
Born in Nineveh October 19, 1926, Mr. Dowden was the son of James and Mary Ann Fraker Dowden. He married Edna Mae Davidson November 8, 1947. She preceded him in death October 19, 1990. He later married Beulah "Boots" Hendershot and she preceded him in death July 27, 2009.
Survivors include his children, Connie (Bill) Miller and Vickie (Hank) Mueller, all of Columbus and Kenneth (Cathy) Dowden of Louisville, Kentucky; a sister, Doris Turner of Columbus; grandchildren, Gretchan (Tom) Hashimoto, Natosha Robinson, Christina (Sean) Bristol, Casey Dowden, Amy (Anthony) Smith, Kellen Phillips and Bryce and Daylan Mueller; eight great-grandchildren and stepchildren, Til Followell of Nashville, Bonnie (Curt) Clarkson of Scipio, Bill (Nancy) Battin of Columbus and Kim Yuleom of Columbus.
Mr. Dowden was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; brothers, Harold, Cecil, Edward, Arnold, and Russell Dowden and a sister, Sylvia Baxter.
