John Allen Staley, 56

John Staley was ranked nationally as chess player

John Allen Staley, 56, of North Vernon died Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at his residence.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services are in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Staley worked as a radiologist for Columbus Regional Hospital for 30 years, currently in the C.T. Department. Prior to Columbus, he worked at the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He received an award in 2006 for the Cambridge Who's Who for Radiology. Mr. Staley was a 1975 graduate of Perry Meridian High School in Greenwood and a 1979 graduate of Indiana University, majoring in radiology technician. He was a former member of the Moose Lodge in Columbus and a current member of the US Chess Federation and American Registry of Radiology Technicians. His hobbies included chess, where he was nationally ranked, and he was an avid reader.

Born August 21, 1957 in Indianapolis, Mr. Staley was the son of Harold Vernon Staley and Norma Elizabeth McCallister. In 1984 he married Annetta Marie Smith in Columbus. She survives.

Survivors include his wife; two step sons, Steven (Suzanne) Harrison of Milton, Florida and David (Kimberly) Harrison of Jennings County; one brother, Harold L. (Carolyn) Staley of Indiana; five grandchildren, Samantha and Michael Harrison of Milton, Florida, Stephanie Harrison of Noblesville, Cody McCammon of Crothersville and Jody McCammon of North Vernon; three great grandchildren ñ Brinley and Riley McCammon of Jennings County and Grace McCammon of Crothersville; three nephews and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack Vernon Staley.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Breast Cancer Research Center.
