Edgar A. Mathews, 83, of B'ville was an involved member of his community
Edgar A. Mathews, 83, of Butlerville died at 6:49 a.m. Thursday, May 2, 2013 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility in Columbus.
Funeral services were Monday at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services with the Rev. Bob Weeks officiating. Burial was in Vernon Cemetery.
Mr. Mathews, a 1948 graduate of Butlerville High School, was a farmer for 62 years and was a former school bus driver for Jennings County School Corporation for 21 years. He was a board member for Southeastern Indiana R.E.M.C. and Farm Bureau Insurance. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he had served as deacon and also a member of Otter Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Mathews had been a trustee for Campbell Township for eight years and also Jefferson County Proving Grounds reorganization council. He had assisted with the location of Brush Creek Elementary School. Mr. Mathews enjoyed operating his bulldozer, backhoe and grain semi, traveling to Europe and the Middle East as well as throughout the U.S. He also enjoyed attending Sunday school and church, researching history, following the stock market and spending time with his family.
Born October 29, 1929 in Hamilton County, Mr. Mathews was the son of Ernest L and Gladys Cox Mathews. He married Jane Murphy on March 23, 1951 in Vevay. She survives.
Additional survivors include his two children, Dave (Deb) Mathews of Newburgh and Susan (Eric) Hoffman of Fisherville, Kentucky; four grandchildren, Ryan Mathews of Zao, Japan, Makenzi (Chase) Hunter of Westport, Kentucky, Keenan Mathews of Newburgh and Sydney Hoffman of Fisherville, Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Edgar Dean Mathews.
