| Sheriff Steve Hoppock |
| Hoppock: 'We are not close to being finished' Jennings County Sheriff Steve Hoppock has announced his candidacy for re-election.
Hoppock, 55, a Republican, filed at the Jennings County Courthouse in Vernon on Jan. 21 in seeking a second four-year term as sheriff.
Hoppock says he believes he is doing what was asked of him by the voters in 2006 and will keep on that same path if re-elected.
"I will continue with the interdiction of drug dealers, updating and upgrading the jail, work with the Jennings County Commissioners and Jennings County Council to expand our efficiency and effectiveness and be fiscally responsible," he said. "We have accomplished much so far but we are not close to being finished."
Hoppock was raised east of Scipio in Geneva Township and is the son of Ruth and the late Gerald Hoppock.
He graduated from Jennings County High School in 1973 and attended the University of Louisville from 1973 to 1975.
Hoppock began his career of service for the people of Jennings County by volunteering for Rescue 20 in 1975. He later became a full-time employee of Rescue 20 and worked there until 1982 when he became a patrolman for the North Vernon Police Department.
He graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in 1983 and earned credits from Vincennes University, Indiana University and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis in Law Enforcement and Labor Studies.
He was promoted to the rank of sergeant with the NVPD in 1985 and was appointed North Vernon's Chief of Police in 1987. He retired from the NVPD in November 2006 as a 24-year veteran and the newly-elected sheriff of Jennings County.
Hoppock is married to Valerie Jackson Hoppock. They reside in Center Township and have two sons, Garrett and Alexander, who attend Jennings County High School. The Hoppocks are members of the North Vernon Church of Christ.
Hoppock is a 22-year member of the North Vernon Kiwanis Club. He is a 28-year member of the Fraternal Order of Police, seven years as a member of the Ohio Crime Prevention Officers Association, a six-year board member of the Jennings County United Way, five-year youth football coach and has been on the Indiana Sheriff Association's board of directors for three years.
"I have been honored to be your sheriff," he said. "I humbly ask for four more years of progress to make your sheriffs office even more efficient and effective."
