Community to mark MLK Day
Ignorance is at the root of racism and bigotry. By shedding the light on at least one small part of little-known American history, knowledge and understanding can increase.

That is the reason why the Park Theatre Civic Centre and three North Vernon churches are sponsoring a free movie presentation on Monday as a Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration.

The Rev. James Wood and the Rev. Johnnie Edwards will lead a short prayer before the award-winning movie, "Hidden Figures."

Both Wood and Edwards believe Monday's event is a perfect way to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. on the 90th anniversary of his birth and the importance of equal rights for all Americans.

"This is an amazing movie that shows part of our history that many people are not aware of," said Wood, pastor of Golden Harvest Community Church, where his wife, Lisa, is an evangelist leader. "It will get people to thinking and open more good understanding and perhaps even dialogue."

Edwards, pastor of the Second United Methodist Church, agreed.

"We need to understand all walks of lives involving all races and ethnic groups in our great country," Edwards said. "This movie opens the door to that and to more communication in the North Vernon community."
